'Consider the Upko proposal' call

Negeri Sembilan: THE Sabah Law
Association said the Federal Government should
seriously consider Upko President Tan Sri
Bernard Dompok's proposal that the Federal
Government give up its five per cent share of
the oil royalty to Sabah.
Its President, Datuk John Sikayun, said this was
because the oil was extracted from within
Sabah's perimeters.
"Certainly (the Federal Government should
seriously consider Dompok's proposal) because
the (oil) resource is from Sabah," he said.
On whether it should be limited to just five per
cent, he said the petroleum sharing contracts
could be amended. Stressing SLA's views, he said
the association welcomes the move to give Sabah
more oil royalty.
Nevertheless, he said the Federal Government
might have other considerations to think of
since it also has 12 other states to look after.
Obviously, he said the Federal Government would
need all its resources that include revenues
from the oil royalty to maintain its development
programmes.
Dompok had said that if the Government really
wants to give Sabah a little more money (in oil
revenue), it should start with by "giving away"
its five per cent oil royalty to the State.
Under a 1976 agreement, Petronas would pay 10
per cent oil royalty to be shared equally
between the Sabah Government and Federal
Government for the oil obtained from Sabah.
